In addition to the above, you can become a member of The American Legion in the following ways:

Ask any American Legion member about joining.
Attend a American Legion Post meeting. You can find your nearest post by clicking the Post menu button on the left.
Contact the Adjutant of the Post that you wish to join.

There are a few requirements for becoming a member of the American Legion:

You must have served at least one day of active duty during one of the following periods:

Aug 2, 1990 to cessation of hostilities as determined by the U.S. Government
Dec 20, 1989 to Jan 31, 1990
Aug 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984
Feb 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975
June 25, 1950 to Jan 31, 1955
Dec 7, 1941 to Dec 31, 1946
April 6, 1917 to Nov 11, 1918

You must have served in one of these branches of service:

U.S. Army
U.S. Navy
U.S. Air Force
U.S. Marines
U.S. Coast Guard
Merchant Marines during the period of 12/7/41 to 12/31/46.

You were honorably discharged, or are serving honorably.
