Paula Stephenson was elected as a National Vice Commander of the 2 million member American Legion during The American Legion’s National Convention on August 24, 2017.

A member of American Legion Post 27 in Farmington, Utah, she served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve for 32 years (22 years active duty).  She received an Army commission in 1977, the first year women were able to receive commissions through the Army ROTC program at the University of Connecticut.  She has held various offices at every level of The American Legion, including Department (state) Commander of Utah from 2014-2015 and the first female to hold this position in Utah.  At the national level, she served as a member of the National Legislative Council, and the Veterans Education, Other Benefits and Homelessness Committee.

Stephenson has been a Legionnaire since 1991, and is a graduate of the National American Legion College (2011).  She received a Utah Governor’s appointment to the State Veterans Cemetery Board, and the Board of Directors, George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home, and was a member of the Utah Veterans Advisory Committee.  She is currently Vice President for the American Legion Utah Boys State Corporation and has worked on the staff of The American Legion Utah Boys State for seven years.

She is married to Past Department Commander of Utah Charles Stephenson (American Legion/Sons of the American Legion member), and has two stepsons and two grandsons, all members of the Sons of the American Legion.

She enjoys traveling with her husband and golf.  Stephenson is one of 12 national officers.
