Since the inception of the Department of Montana's Essay Contest in 1989, The American Legion has awarded well over $18,500 in scholarships, while local American Legion Posts have also offered suitable awards and prizes for their respective best essay winners.
Through the annual Department of Montana American Legion Essay contest, students are provided an opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities by using originality, accuracy and research as evidence, while learning that the Constitution of the United States of America.
As American Legionnaires, we fully believe that education is the cornerstone upon which the future of America is built; education becomes the first requisite of good citizenship. The relationship of The American Legion of Montana to our communities youth is of prime importance as a means of keeping us a free civilization.
Any student enrolled in grades 7 and 8 and 9 through 12 in a public, private or parochial School or who is home schooled in Montana is eligible to participate.
The Department of Montana encourages all Posts to participate in the Essay Program. The contest officially starts on Constitution Day (September 17th) and runs through March 1st. The winning essay from each participating Post must be forwarded on to the Department Education and Training Chairman NO LATER THAN March 15th to be eligible for the Department Contest. The American Legion of Montana strongly feels that participation in this program will help prepare students for the Department Oratory Contest and help them have a better understanding of the U.S. Constitution.
Prizes To Be Awarded for best Junior High (7/8) and best High School (9-12)
Each Post sets their own award or prize amount without direction from Department.
The Department of Montana Junior High Essay First Place Winner will be awarded a $400 cash scholarship, the Second Place Winner will receive a $250 scholarship and the Third Place Winner will receive a $150 scholarship.
The Department of Montana High School Essay First Place Winner will be awarded a $400 cash scholarship, the Second Place Winner will receive a $250 scholarship and the Third Place Winner will receive a $150 scholarship.
