The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program - "A Constitutional Speech Contest" - is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high schools. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for the acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

Oratorical Scholarship Awards
Post and District awards vary depending on the Post or District commitment to the program.
Zone awards for the four Zones are $250 for 1st place, $175 for 2nd place and $150 for 3rd place.
Department awards are $1,500 for 1st place, $750 for 2nd place, $450 for 3rd place and $400 for 4th place.
The Department winner competes at the National Contest in Indianapolis, IN. The awards at National include $1,500 for competing in the first round plus another $1,500 if you reach the second round. Pass the second round into the finals and you are competing for $18,000, $16,000 or $14,000 for placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the Nation.

2. COLLEGE AWARDS ARE NOT TRANSFERRABLE TO OTHER COLLEGES.
