Boys State 2020 is June 7th through 12th at Carroll College, Helena, MT
Delegate Fee: $300 Accepting registration beginning in January 2020, Posts and High Schools will be mailed information in January 2020.
American Legion Boys State is among one of the most respected educational programs of government instruction for high school students. At Montana American Legion Boys State, we emphasize not only the elective democratic process, but also the legislative, bill-writing activities found throughout our government. As the week passes, each delegate finds himself in a variety of government situations at the city, county, and state levels. Well-rounded programming complements the government simulations to provide a complete week of learning both in and out of the classroom.
The American Legion organized Boys State in 1935 in Illinois. Currently, 49 states (and Puerto Rico) conduct their session(s) of Boys State each summer. Montana American Legion Boys State was established in 1947 and was held in Dillon on the campus of Western Montana College until 2004. In 2005, the program moved to the campus of Carroll College in Helena to enhance the delegate experience by utilizing the Capitol building throughout the week and by having better access to State elected officials and their offices. The American Legion hopes to foster patriotism, citizenship, and leadership through its weeklong Boys State programs. Many State programs have slight differences, but we feel that Montana American Legion Boys State is among the strongest and best in the nation.
Activities throughout the week include elections (City, County, and State) city meetings, county meetings, legislative sessions, court proceedings, assemblies-speakers, band/ choir, press and other recreational programs. At the end of the week, two delegates are selected to attend the prestigious Boys Nation held in Washington, D.C. These two delegates will represent Montana as Senators to pass bills and run for National office during that week.
The SAMSUNG scholarship (see below for qualifications and application process) is also awarded upon conclusion of the session.
MT American Legion Posts select high school juniors (incoming Seniors) to attend the program. In most cases the sponsoring Post or other community-based organizations (ex. Rotary, Elks, Knights of Columbus, etc.) pay the expenses associated with attending the program.
